MOBILE MEDIA LAB

ABOUT

The Mobile Media Lab explores how people use mobile technologies in everyday life—and how we can better understand these practices through innovative, hands-on research methods. We work with creative and ethnographic approaches to study how mobile devices shape communication, culture, and community.
Mobile media practices are constantly changing—shaped by rapid developments in technology, platforms, and digital infrastructure. The Lab responds to these shifts by developing new ways to capture and interpret the rich, complex role mobile media plays in daily experience.
Building on over 15 years of internationally recognised research by Larissa Hjorth, Ingrid Richardson and collaborators, the Lab continues to lead in the development of mobile media methods that are responsive, collaborative, and grounded in lived experience.
Our activities include:
-
Training: Equipping and upskilling postgraduates in mobile media research and emerging ethnographic techniques
-
Pilot studies: Trialling new ethnographic approaches to data collection, leading to co-publications and supporting research grant applications
-
Workshops: Exploring the adaptation and application of mobile ethnographic methods across diverse fields
-
Sensory Methods: Investigating haptic and sensory-based approaches to explore mobile screen use, embodiment, and mobile media literacies, particularly in later life
-
Creative Research: Connecting creative practice and ethnography to foster community engagement and alternative forms of science communication
